Reliance on traditional security measures and procedures that currently help to secure our critical information platforms is becoming dated. With limited resources and turbulent economic conditions businesses may prioritise innovation and growth over online security and cyber crime risk mitigation. These areas can be seen as expensive, burdensome and time consuming. It is important though that these issues are recognised and assessed and that companies are aware of the risks that they face from cyber criminals. In the 2015-2016 financial year there were over 19,000 London based victims of cyber crime with losses totalling £402 million. A significant number of these victims were businesses.
The Metropolitan Police Cyber Protect team was set up to advise businesses on how to protect themselves in the cyber world. In the upcoming Victoria BID seminar Special Police Officers from the Protect Team will provide attendees with information on current cyber crime threats and what businesses can do to prevent themselves falling victims to cyber criminals.
