Get involved in STEAM Week

Headline Date 08-01-2019

Westminster STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) week takes place as part of British Science Week from Monday 11 March – Friday 15 March 2019. The week targets secondary schools in Westminster and seeks to inspire and provide advice on entering STEAM sectors.

According to STEM Learning the shortfall of graduates in science, technology, engineering and maths costs the UK economy £1.5bn a year due to increased recruitment, training and temporary staff costs for businesses. In addition, 9 in 10 employers have found it difficult to recruit staff with the right skills, leading to a shortfall of more than 173,000 workers – an average of 10 unfilled roles per business. These statistics alongside a lack of diversity within the STEM sector, with women only making up 24% of its core workforce in 2017 (WISE), means it is more than ever critical to engage with young people and encourage their entrance into STEM industries.

We are keen to build upon the great success experienced in previous years and would welcome the opportunity to collaborate with businesses in Victoria and Victoria Westminster. Previous events have included workplace tours, Coding, Virtual Reality and Finance workshops for groups of 12 -20 young people and presentations at school assemblies. If your business would like to get involved or you would like more information, please contact Lucy McNicholas.
